World Steel Association Releases April 2026 Short-Range Steel Demand Forecast

The World Steel Association has released its short-range steel demand forecast for 2026-2027: global steel demand is projected to rise by a modest 0.3% to 1.724 billion metric tons in 2026, followed by an accelerated growth of 2.2% to 1.762 billion metric tons in 2027. The association confirms that global steel demand is bottoming out in 2025-2026, marking the end of the prolonged structural adjustment phase that suppressed demand since 2022.

Regional dynamics diverge sharply: China’s demand contraction is easing, while developing markets led by India see robust growth; the Middle East faces a steep demand decline in 2026 due to ongoing conflicts; developed economies are expected to see a substantial turnaround. The forecast is based on data through mid-March, with a core assumption that the Middle East conflict will be resolved by June; prolonged hostilities would trigger significant downward revisions. Compared with the October 2025 forecast, the 2026 global growth rate has been revised down by 1 percentage point, mainly due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
